This lesson is designed to help art teachers facilitate online critiques with their students. It begins with warm-up activities that will help students understand expressive language and the critique process. The online critique platform described in this lesson is a free platform called Padlet. Students can utilize Padlet with a cell phone or computer. Students will utilize fundamental DVL skills developed in the previous Cell Phone Photography lesson to upload their own original works of art.
Online critique helps students develop critical thinking and written language skills
It mimics social media and online message boards, which young people already utilize on a frequent basis
This method can be less time consuming than traditional, oral critiques
It creates a preserved, written record of what was said during a critique
Students don't feel as much pressure to share their thoughts or artwork face-to-face and can help build confidence
Absent students or long-distance learners can still participate in critiques
